P3- Describe how a selected organisation uses marketing research to contribute
to the development of its marketing plans.

For this task I am going to explain how Thorpe Park conducts the marketing
research. This will include the primary and secondary research that involves the
amount of sales they will make, the questionnaires and surveys, interviews and
other methods that will help in the research.

Explain how Thorpe Park conducts marketing research.
Marketing research is really important for a business when they want to
develop a new product. This is because if you do a research you will be
aware of what the public want and what are they needs, and then you will
have an idea on what your product will be and how it should be. If a
company wants to produce a new product and they don’t do enough
researches or any at all, then it will be a guess product because the
company is imagining what the customer will like, not what they really will
want.

Thorpe Park uses marketing research when they want to make a new
product/ride for the customers. When they wanted to build the ‘Saw Ride’
they did a lot of researches to discover that it will be a good idea to build
it. If they never did any research it would be too risky because they
wouldn’t know if customers would like the ride.
Something that is in the Thorpe Park’s marketing research is the time of
the year which they will mostly make profit. In summer between June and
the end of August is when they will make more profit according to their
research. Reason for it is because students are in holidays, and summer is
when people come abroad to visit the Thorpe Park, so it’s the best time to
have a brand new ride for the customers.

-Primary research:
Primary research is a data information gathered first hand. This means
that the information is original and never had been used before. The
primary research consists in 2 ways; the internal research and external.
Thorpe Park utilises some of these methods to discover vital information
and data. They collect information by doing questionnaires, so the public
can give their opinion and thoughts about Thorpe Park’s improvement or
new idea.
Sales figures are an internal research for the business. The sale figures in
Thorpe Park are for the rollercoaster or the service that they provided for
customers, so it’s an internal research because its data information that

can only be gathered from inside the business.
Questionnaires and surveys are also part of the primary research. This is
information that can be gathered from outside the Thorpe Park, that’s why
it fits in the External research. Questionnaires are to help the business to
know what the customers likes, hates, about the business. This was made
for the business to be aware of what the customer wants from the
business, so if they are willing to make a new product, a questionnaire
would be needed because it will show the interest of the customers.
Interview is another method that is helpful for Thorpe Park. When an
interview is arranged the applicants will give them their details and the
company will evaluate it, and go over the information to see what the
applicant thinks about the company and the purpose why he decided to
go for this business.

Secondary research:
Secondary research means that the information and data is not gathered
first-hand. So Thorpe Park does a research with information which has
been collected previously either by the same organisation which is
internal, or it can be from another organisation, but then it’s an external
research.
Previews marketing research is when a company has previously done a
research for the marketing.

Trade Journals and websites are used to display the service of a business
like Coca-Cola when they are advertising a new Coke flavour, they
normally advertise in websites.
Books & Newspaper are really useful to show the customers what the
business does and what it sells. Many people have the habit to read every
day, especially newspaper, so also for a business to display its service/
products or give information about them, the newspaper is one of the best
ideas.

Which of the methods of marketing research used by Thorpe Park are
internal and which are external?

Thorpe Park uses both internal and external marketing research. They
utilise questionnaires and surveys, make use of websites for their external
research. This is really useful when doing a external marketing research
because by doing questionnaires they will know what does the public think
about Thorpe Park. Example, if Thorpe Park decides to increase the price
of the entrance or, add a new eating place in their Park, questionnaires
will be the most efficient, as customers will say what they think about this
