WHEN WRITING A SUMMARY
When writing a summary do not use dates, quotes or percentages. It is
unnecessary!
Other things not to include are:
- No unnecessary detail
- No repetitions
- No statistics
- No examples
- No quotes
- No direct speech
- No figures of speech
REMEMBER!
o PAST TENSE
o Always use 3rd person
o No contractions
o No copying and pasting- write in your own words
o Follow in chronological order
o Summary must be logical
o Must include word count at the end
o [90 words]-can be 92 but not 88- compromising!
o Put a line through your rough draft – DO PLANNING!!
o Highlight main points
o Title – short, flair, register, formal/informal, cleverly/understanding,
euphemistic way (make it your own!)
o If you can end off, end off!
o PURPOSE OF THE SUMMARY
o Only important points and remember to write clear sentences.
o Adhered to all the rules – cross them out once you have done them
o Do not lie on your word count – penalised
Process:
1. Read the instructions
2. Read the passage/text
1. Cross out the information you will not be using in the summary (All
numbers, names, ages, quotes, lists, any description, dates- general
information not specific information)
3. Highlight the main points, only necessary information- merge
sentences, or phrases that are important
Turn it over and write a rough draft (planning) of key points in your
own words (making sure we are writing in our own words)
4. Linking information recalled from memory and what you highlighted
5. Put sentences into order
6. Check Language and register is right, cannot use contractions
7. Do a word count, edit and polish your summary
