A hazard is an origin or condition with the possible risk of harm to human’s injury and ill
health damage to the property, environment, or a combination of both. (Laboratory Hazards
and Risks, Author unknown 2021)
Biological laboratory hazards
Biological hazards are possible exposures to allergens experimental agents such as viral
vectors infectious zoonotic. Types of biological hazards involve viruses, bacteria, birds,
plants, humans, and animals. The bulk of these agents are harmless but may cause ill health
the three types of biological agents that are of concern include viruses, bacteria, and fungi.
These are mostly the main ones. (Laboratory Hazards and Risks, Author unknown 2021)
All the members in the biology lab must be given sufficient protection even if dangers are
nowhere in site materials such as blood, viruses, bacteria can carry hazardous allergens or
disease which could put the people in the lab at greater risk. Infectious biological hazards
can be in between the biggest risk of the research lab so every decision must be carefully
made to certify the people and the ensure the public is protected against the contagious
materials. (Laboratory Hazards: Chemical, Physical & Biological Hazards in the Lab, Author

Biological storages/prevention
Genuine storage and protection are the solution to preventing an emergency in your lab
wearing suitable protective clothing and keeping biological agents stored in the right area
are beneficial for decreasing exposure to risk. Procedures and systems for safe use e.g.,
storage handling and transport of biological hazards should be in place. Proper cleaning
such as disinfecting work surfaces and disposing of waste are also essential for decreasing
biological risks. (Laboratory Hazards: Chemical, Physical & Biological Hazards in the Lab,

Emergency
Emergency course of action must be prepared beforehand this is to minimise risk to the
environment and people. Making sure to contain the biological hazard based on the
situation a course of actions may be required for example evacuation, isolating the area,
informing others, seeking assistance, preventing the spread of spills and contamination
medical treatment and first aid may be required in most situations. (Laboratory Hazards:
