Unit 5: Meeting Individual Care and Support Needs

5/A.P1 Explain the importance of promoting equality and diversity for individuals with
different needs.
Equality and diversity are key and central components of health and social care. Effective
equality and diversity practices ensure that the services provided by professionals to the
service users are at high standards, meet personal needs and accessible to everyone.

Equality
Equality means “the state of being equal”, in health and social care it ensures everyone has
an equal access to services they need, it should meet their personal needs no matter their
ability, background, religion, race, gender, age, culture, where they live or how they live
their lives. This does not mean everyone will receive the same service, it means that an
individual will be given quality service and support for their specific needs. Health and social
care professionals need to make sure that the service users are given equal opportunity, for
example, hospitals or care organisations may give out information in different formats e.g.,
braille for people who are visually impaired, longer appointments for people who have
learning disabilities or ramps to access buildings for an individual in a wheelchair. Anti-
discriminatory practice underlines the ethical basics of care provision and importance to the
protection of people’s dignity. It states the everyone should be treated without prejudice,
and it is against the law to treat an individual different from others, as health and social care
professionals have a duty to care for service users. They must treat people with respect as
its critical to take account of individuals beliefs and ability, all service providers should take
into consideration the individual’s personal beliefs, even if they wish not to mention them. If
a person is fasting, cannot eat certain foods or must pray at certain times, the people
providing the service should understand and respect them and not let their own views
interrupt in helping and treating patients. If they fail to do this, they will feel unvalued and
unappreciated that staff failed to accommodate their views, this could lead to a delayed
recovery as they would not only be battling their current condition, but they will also be
facing problems mentally and emotionally as their needs are not being met. That is why it is
important for people working in a health and social care settings to promote equality.

Diversity
Diversity means understanding and acknowledging that there is a variety or wide range of
people with many differences, it also appreciates the contrast between unique people and
treating their values, beliefs, cultures, and way of life with respect. Diversity can be express
as ‘difference’. All individuals are different; the many different sections of a person’s
character and identity makes them unique. Examples of things that make up diversity are
age, job role, health, sexual orientation, appearance, or race. Health and social care
organisations are permitted to respect, appreciate difference, and value individuals no
matter of their religion or culture beliefs, attitudes, or other differences. Staff need to
understand and assess the things that make people different to promote diversity, the care
and support they provide must be specific to each individual need, wishes and preferences.
Person-centred care builds in the likes and dislikes, beliefs, and personal history of an
individual to meet their needs in the most foremost possible. The UK is a multicultural
society which is an advantage because everyone comes from different and diverse
backgrounds including service providers and service users. This helps people realise that
