Lecture 1
Important questions to ask when reading a medieval text
- When was this composed?
- When was it (first) written down?
- Is the version you are reading the only version?
- How does it differ from other versions (if any)?
- How much time had passed between this text being composed/written down for the first
time and the earliest (= oldest) surviving copy?
An * is used for things that are hypothetical.
Oral transmission happens alongside written transmission.
