Ethnicity inequality

Education
The first way in which individuals from an ethnic minority face
inequality in society is through the education system. This can
be highlighted though the use of labelling in schools (Becker)
and the assumptions teachers uphold based on stereotyping.
Sociologist Jasper identified this and stated that black African
Caribbean boys are negatively treated by teachers and have
extremely high exclusion rates as theys national curriculum
promotes englandism and is ethnocentric. This is because the
education system only largely teaches about white European
experiences of history and leaves out any other ethnic groups. An
example of this is through the literature and language used in
schools. Resulting in particular subgroups in education feeling

everyday workings of schools and colleges. Therefore, resulting
in the underperformance of black students in their academic
achievements as they tend to perform worse than white students.
However Indian and Chinese students often outperform white
students- due to what is known as tiger parents (Chua). Despite
this, Sedgi 2014 stated that Chinese, black and Indian ethnic
groups outperformed white British students at gcse- highlighting
the inaccuracy of labelling and stereotypes.

Workforce
A final way in which inequality in ethnicity is highlighted in
society is through the workforce and financial income. This is
because ethnic minorities are more likely to be unemployed
compared to white British individuals due to multiple factors.
Flaherty 2004 highlighted this and suggested that minorities can
end up in poverty due to difficulty with the benefit system.
Furthermore, evidence has reinforced the struggle ethnic
minorities face when it comes to their employability due to their
foreign sounding names (Wood et al). Wood et al carried out a
field experiment on this and found it took an average of 16
applications before someone with a minority sounding name got a
response. Highlighting the discrimination minority individuals
face when it comes to their employability rate. Sociologist Dood
identified that some Muslims often change their name or remove
