M1 Explain how the management of human, physical and technological resources can
improve the performance of a selected organization

In this Task I will be elaborating how human, physical and Technological resources are managed in
Amazon and how their management can improve the performance of the organization.

1.

Human resources are employees working within a business that can be trained and managed to
effectively carry out their jobs. Human resources must be treated fairly and nicely as they are
employees and not slaves. Employees are protected by legalization and any treatment against the
legalization can impact the organization negatively. Below are some of the way Human resources
are managed in Amazon and how they can be managed to improve their performance:

Amazon gives warehouse employees fifteen minute breaks for 10 hour shifts and also track
employees TOT (Time off Task) to ensure that work is done effectively and employees don’t slack.
Amazon ensures that work is swift and employees work fast to meet their high demand; if
employees are slow it may affect the organization as they like to be known for their swiftness.
However there have been numerous complaints from employees that the breaks are too short and
it actually takes a long time to get to the break rooms as the fulfillment centers are massive. Since
Amazon wants work to be done effectively I think they should start treating their employees more
nicely, it doesn’t mean they have to make their breaks longer, they should make employees work
harder/more effectively to get longer breaks, they should offer breaks as an incentive, employees
will work more effectively to receive these incentives, the more effectively you work, the more likely
to receive longer breaks as an incentive. This will result into employees being happy in their work
conditions and improve productivity and the company’s performance.

TOT at Amazon is taken very seriously that even short toilet breaks are counted as TOTs and
numerous employees have been fired for having extensive TOTs (6 points and you are gone),
hundreds of employees are fired at a single Amazon facility. The company isn’t doing a lot in
recruiting their employees, employees may be valuable but just because of unreasonable TOTs they
don’t recruit them and happily employ even more employees; with the numerous employments that
Amazon does I even firmly believe their recruitment is not extensive and they employ just anyone
that wants the job even when job vacancies aren’t available because they want work to be done as
quickly as possible, and the more employees the more hands to do the work. I am aware that
Amazon is a large organization but I firmly believe they should only employ when job vacancies are
available and recruit employees, numerous firing and quickly replacing isn’t a good strategy to the
development of the company as valuable employees may be lost unreasonably. TOTs for toilet
breaks and other short breaks should not be counted as the company is over firing valuable
employees, an employee may have been working for Amazon for the longest of time and has
attained valuable skills but simply let go because they’ve had toilet breaks! To recruit employees
they should not make hasty decisions, they should check if the employee is valuable and if they are,
at least give them are warning, the counting toilet breaks as TOTs should be abolished altogether.

treatment to Employees

I
previously said that breaks should be earned by hard work but that is for longer breaks and not the
short irrelevant breaks like toilet breaks, those should not be earned, those should be given. I am
sure employees at Amazon may not want to go to the toilet because they are scared that their TOT
might increase and try to avoid toilet breaks as much as possible. This doesn’t seem fair and they
should better their management towards this issue to make employees feel more relaxed at work. If
employees are satisfied with their working conditions that means they will perform their work more
effectively.

Over 14000 serious injuries at Amazons fulfillment centers were recorded as of 2019. Employees
feel unsafe in their working conditions and it was also reported by numerous employees including
Michelle Quionones, that they have to fight for compensation over injuries that they sustain at
workplaces. Under NSW workers compensation (an example of HR legislation), workers must be
compensated for injuries at work; they should not have to battle and go to court to receive their HR
rights, companies should know the legislation of HR
and grant it to them without trouble. The Amazon
worker’s compensation insurer has bad
management and due to their slack in management
many people may be scared to work for Amazon
because they don’t compensate them and still make
them work after obtaining serious injuries. Amazon
should first attempt into finding the reasons behind
More protests on injuries at Amazon
the numerous injuries, what is causing them? What
can be fixed? Etc. doing this frequently will show
employees that their management cares for them and is trying to redeem and fix their problems.
Fixing their problems and causes behind the injuries will also mean injuries may be reduced and that
means less money for compensation will be sucked out from the company being beneficial to the
company and letting it develop further from frequently compensating. Amazon should also not try
and go around the law and immediately compensate employees without causing them any
problems. Compensation due to injuries will be reduced if they find the causes behind the injuries
and do frequent research instead of trying to go around the law.
