English book review
By: Floren Bout (V4B)
Book title: The Hunger Games
Author: Suzanne Collins is an American television writer and author, best known as
the author of The New York Times bestselling series “The Underland Chronicles” and
“The Hunger Games” trilogy.
Year of publication: 2008
Number of pages: 464

The plot
In a dystopian future, the totalitarian nation of Panem is divided into 12 districts and
the Capitol. Each year two young representatives from each district are selected by
lottery to participate in The Hunger Games. Part entertainment, rutal retribution for a
past rebellion, the televised games are broadcast throughout Panem. The 24
participants are forced to eliminate their competitors while the citizens of Panem are
required to watch. When 16-year-old Katniss' young sister, Prim, is selected as
District 12's female representative, Katniss volunteers to take her place. She and her
male counterpart, Peeta, are pitted against bigger, stronger representatives, some of
whom have trained for this their whole lives.

The setting
The book takes place in the United States of America the future. They don’t actually
say that, but you know it because of all the technology they have. Also, there was a
next war and the next war hasn’t happened yet. So it must be in the future.
The story takes place in District 12, the Capitol and in the Arena.

The theme
The universal idea of the book is love. The love from Katniss for her sister Prim. And
the staged fake love between Katniss and Peeta to win the Hunger Games, what
turns out to be true love.

The protagonist
The main character is Katniss Everdeen. Katniss is a 16-year old brave girl that has
been through a lot. Not only is she living in great poverty, her beloved father died
while he was working in the mines. That leaves Katniss living with her mother (who
couldn’t handle her husband’s death and failed in taking care of her children) and her
sister Primrose, who means the world to Katniss. The only way to stay alive was to
hunt, a talent that Katniss had been taught by her father. In this way Katniss
manages to take care of her whole family. She hunts together with Gale, probably
her only friend, an 18-year old boy who she splits the food with. Then there’s Peeta:
a friendly boy who risked a beating by tossing Katniss some bread and is madly in
love with her. He will never be rude, but you’ll never know if he means what he’s
saying or not. When Katniss has to participate in the Hunger Games, it changes her
whole live.

You and the main character
I can relate to the main character, she has almost the same age as me and I
understand the things she does and says. I can’t imagine how it would be to in the
Hunger Games, but I would definitely be as scared as her. I however wouldn’t do all
the things she did, she is much braver than me.
