Unit 4: Laboratory Techniques and their Application
Assignment B: Explore the manufacturing techniques and testing
methods for an organic liquid
Scenario
I work as a lab worker in a food company’s research and development
department. Artificially flavoured sweets are one of the company’s goods.
The ester in the sweets is ethyl ethanoate.
I am looking into how to synthesis ethyl ethanoate and how to evaluate
its purity so that the company can generate it efficiently.
I will make an ethyl ethanoate sample and test its purity. I will have to
compare my laboratory technique to the cosmetics company’s industrial
process for producing ethyl ethanoate on a huge scale.
The Preparation of Ethyl Ethanoate
Stage 1 – Reacting ethanol and glacial ethanoic acid and refluxing
Introduction – What exactly is ethyl ethanoate and what is it used for?
Ethyl Ethanoate, commonly known as Ethyl Acetate (Formula -
CH3COOC2H5), can be classified as an organic molecule since it is made
up of two or more chemically linked components, most notably Ethanol
and Ethanoic Acid.
Ethyl Ethanoate is a chemical that emits a nail polish fragrance and is
used in a variety of applications, this emits a noticeable and sweet odour.
Ethyl Ethanoate is used in many things such as perfumes, cleaning
substances and many types of paints (its flammable).
It is used in perfumes all over the world most because of its sweet-
smelling odour, but also because its colourless. (SolvChemCustomPack

Aim

,Firstly, I needed to mix 50cm3 of ethanol with 50cm3 of glacial ethanoic
acid that was provided, this is what will be placed into the apparatus. To
use the appropriate equipment and set up the appropriate apparatus for
the procedure of reflux, by heating the mixture for about 15 – 20
minutes, then cooling down the mixture, which is now vaporised, this is
condensed and collected back into the flask.
Reflux is a process that involves condensing vapours and returning the
condensate to the system from whence it came.
Apparatus and Equipment

Safety –

 Goggles
 Laboratory coat (specific size, buttoned up)
 Gloves – Reduce the exposure to the chemicals being used

Experiment –

 50cm3 of ethanol – Making part of the original mixture that will be
involved in reflux
 50cm3 of glacial ethanoic acid – Making part of the original
mixture, that will be involved in reflux
 10cm3 of saturated sulphuric acid – This will be used as a catalyst
to speed up the rate of reaction
 500cm3 glass beaker – This will hold the round-bottom flask when
mixing the chemicals - to keep it stable
 Round-bottomed flask – This will be holding the chemicals
 X2 measuring cylinders – To transfer the chemicals
Reflux setup – consisting of
 X2 Clamp stand – Hold up the condenser and round-bottom
flask
 Condenser – Allows chilly water to filter upwards
 Heating mantle – Heats up the mixture
 X2 rubber tubing – Water for in and wastewater out
