, KEEPING NEW GRADUATES IN NURSING
1
I am presenting a leadership practice change project. This paper will discuss the issues of
high drop out of new nursing graduates. For this paper, my definition of a new nursing graduate
is one with less than 12 months of work experience after graduating from an accredited nursing
program. Per our nursing accreditation, my nursing program is required to conduct a survey six
months after graduation. Most of our nursing graduates stay in our community, so we receive a
good sample size or returned surveys. I have noticed a trend that some students are leaving the
profession of nursing. I have always asked that if a student has issues with finding a job after
graduations to call me for assistance. The few times this has happened was because the new
graduated desired a Monday through Friday, no nights and no weekend work schedule. This
paper will show my research on how many new graduates actually leave the nursing profession,
the reasons why they choose to leave the profession and using Benner’s theoretical model, how
we can retain our nurse graduates in our profession.
I am doing my practice change project on the new RN with less than 1-year working
experience post-graduation and the high turnover due to lack of knowledge of increased stress.
Knowing played a big part in my decision to be a change agent in the clinical site to stop new
graduates from leaving the hospital setting, or worse leaving the field of nursing. Analytic
knowledge guided my decision for the topic of my project. I consistently hear of new RN
graduates quitting their OR internship, ICU internship or medical/surgical internship and going
back to their previous job. On the first day during orientation, I always ask my incoming students
why they want to be a nurse. Upon graduation, I know that nursing has always been their dream.
I also know how hard the student worked not only to get accepted into the nursing program but
to maintain the grades necessary to graduate from our nursing program. It became extremely
frustrating to me to watch great future nurses leaving the profession because they were not
