Evidence based practice, research and quality improvement all work together to produces
improvement in patient outcome and satisfaction. Quality improvement is defined as methods
applied to expand a practice recognized as a disparity. Quality improvement involves series of
recognizing challenges or inequalities, testing, and observations of the new procedure(Debora
Dang; Sandra L. Dearholt, 2018).
Evidence based practice is used is healthcare practice and considered a core competency. It
provides quality of care and patient satisfaction. EBP helps with decision making and solving
issues that arises. EBP incorporates scientific support with the best available experiental
evidence (Debora Dang; Sandra L. Dearholt, 2018).
Nurse practitioners in primary care have opportunities to assess and screen case load for STI
quite often. Evaluating sexual behaviors and examining for STIs, include HIV, are vital in early
prevention of STIs. Conducting a thorough sexual history also offers an opportunity for
providers to talk to patients and prevent latent complications. I also gives the provider to build
trust, and counsel patients on healthy behaviors(Sheddan & Wood, 2021).
Working in primary care as an HIV nurse practitioner there are many missed opportunities to
screen for STD/HIV infections. STI intervention is problematic in the USA with records rates of
chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis being reported. While HIV is on the decline, this is still an
increase rate of other STI. Being an HIV nurse practitioner, we utilize evidence-based strategies
to obtain a sexual health history. The tool used is the “5 Ps”: partners, practice, prevention of
pregnancy, protection from STIs and history of STIs. This assessment tool determined gender
and number of partners, need for testing, discussion of sites to collect specimens for STI testing,
risk reduction strategies and exploring the patient’s general risk. NPs can promote practice
changes by leading evidence-based initiatives within the practice setting (Sheddan & Wood,
2021).
Separation of EBP, QI, and research into mutually limited categories causes confusion and
division rather than integration and undermines from the global goal of improving patient care.
(Carter et al., 2017)
