Part 3

What does the course instructor mean by “integrative abilities”? Provide evidence to

support your response.

In the Essentials of Master’s Education in Nursing from the American Association of Colleges of

Nursing (AACN) (2011), the fourth essential recognizes the importance of translating and integrating

research or scholarship into the practice setting, in addition to resolving practice problems, working as

a change agent, and disseminating research results when applicable. The eighth essential recognizes

the importance of an APN be able to integrate, “broad, organizational, client-centered, and culturally

,appropriate concepts in the planning, delivery, management, and evaluation of evidence-based clinical

prevention and population care and services to individuals, families, and aggregates/identified

populations” (AACN, 2011, p. 5).

According to the Scope and Practice Standards set forth by the International Nurse

Practitioner/Advanced Practice Nursing (INP/ANP) Network of the International Council of Nursing (ICN)

(2005), scope of practice entails, “cognitive, integrative, and technical abilities of the qualified nurse to

put into practice ethical and culturally safe acts, procedures, protocols and practice guidelines” (p. 3).

Through the integration of practical and critical thinking skills, the APN provides ethically and culturally

competent care.

The AACN (2011) also discusses the integration of nursing and related sciences as a way of

delivering advanced practice nursing care to diverse patient populations, “The master’s-prepared

nurse integrates findings from the sciences and the humanities, biopsychosocial fields, genetics, public

health, quality improvement, health economics, translational science, and organizational sciences for

the continual improvement of nursing care” (p. 10). Integrative abilities may also refer to the utilization

of, “theory, evidence, clinical judgment, research, and interprofessional perspectives” for the purpose

of improving health care outcomes (AACN, 2011, p. 16).

RE: Part 3

Hi Meghan,

The term integration can have multiple meanings, and you have identified one of them! The ability to

integrate research in to practice is an essential component to APN practice, setting us apart as it

comes to outcomes.

Great work!

Dr. Duncan

Week Two Discussion Three

Dr. Duncan and Classmates,

Integrative abilities incorporate not just traditional and surgical methods to treat a patient but

integrates a holistic approach to treat patients/clients. A holistic approach includes at times

alternative practices that incorporate modalities that heal the mind, body and soul. With the use of

such modalities as massage therapy, Reiki, foot reflexology, acupuncture, chiropractic manipulation

that include such practices as muscle memory, homeopathic medicine, osteopathic medicine,

aromatherapy, cranial sacral manipulation, kampo, shiatsu massage, and hypnotherapy to name a

few (Kennedy, Gray, Black,2011).

The APN must be aware of different modalities that their patient/client may benefit from to aid in their

healing process. It is also important to understand the belief systems of their patients/clients and what

this patient may believe will help them. Consideration also needs to take into account the ability of

the patient/client to pay out of pocket for some of these modalities as insurance does not pay for all of

them. Homeopathy and osteopathy as well as chiropractic manipulation is paid by most insurances,

however many of the massage modalities and acupuncture may not be covered. Reiki and foot

reflexology are usually not paid as well as herbal therapy. However hydrotherapy can be considered a

physical therapy and is usually paid by insurances (American Institute of Health Care Specialists,

2016).
