ENDOCRINE SYSTEM
Hormones
- Hormones are the body’s chemical messengers
- They are made up of proteins
Properties:
- Do not act independently
form an integrated system bringing about co-ordination had homeostasis through
specific effects on organs
- Control a wide variety of functions
- Hormones are secreted in small amounts directly into the blood which transports
them to their target organs (organs they stimulate)
Endocrine gland
- Ductless gland
- Releases hormones directly into the bloodstream
(Released into the bloodstream because hormones have many different target
organs)
- E.g.) pituitary gland and thyroid gland
Exocrine gland
- Gland that releases discharge (juices) into ducts
- E.g.) Salivary and sweat gland
Exception to the rule:
Pancreas
- Functions as an endocrine and exocrine gland
Exocrine function
- Secretes pancreatic juice through the pancreatic duct into the duodenum
Endocrine function
- Islets of Langerhans inside the pancreas secrete insulin and glucagon into the
bloodstream

TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) Stimulates the thyroid gland to secrete
thyroxin
REPRODUCTIVE HORMONES
FSH Stimulates follicle development
LH Stimulates ovulation and development of
the corpus luteum
Stimulate the graafian follicle to produce
oestrogen
PROLACTIN Stimulate milk production
