Background of the Problem
Change is inevitable especially in the business world where organizations strive to
improve in terms of market share, revenue, and turnover. Change management refers to an
important part of life which is normally constant in many organizations. The introduction of new
economies has led to business opportunities for both private and public organizations. This thus
has led to traditional organizations to accept the phenomenon of change through understanding
that this is essential for the existence of the organization in the economic world (Beer & Nohria,
2001). It is essential for organizations that want to be successful to ensure that they embrace the
concept of change management to avoid being extinct. Change is difficult for most organizations
since the success is not guaranteed. Failure of change initiatives in organizations is mostly due to
rush from seniors, loss of focus, and being overwhelmed with the literature concerning the
implementation of change.
The need for change and the current environment that organizations operate in is another
dilemma. Studies have argued that modern organizations find themselves in an environment that
is volatile and the need for presenting and managing change in a successful manner is now seen
as a competitive need (Chapman, 2002). It is this environment that determines ways in which the
organization must function. There is no singular definition of what establishes the current
environment since it is closely related to the environmental variables (economic, sociological,
political and technological) that influence the organization. The variables are essential since they
play an important part in the determination of the type of change that should be implemented.
They also indicate the speed of proposing a change.
The phenomena of change in organizations have been well researched and documented in
association with change and change management. There is a range of perspective of change due
