Unit 14 - Computer Games Development

The current market for gamming
There are a lot of new technology being made by the year. New consoles as well as stronger pc
components are being created. This also means that new games for these new consoles and to test

, out new computer power. As well as this with the recent pandemic there was an increase in gamers
across platforms as they were forced to spend their time at home and using games as a way to help
them get through their days. In addition to more people playing games in general platforms like
Twitch and YouTube also became much more popular with a large number of people on these
platforms watching content or actually providing content. Between the years 2014 to 2020 YouTube
had gained 700 million users “Which means half of the globe online population are YouTube users”
this incredible increase can be seen on the graph shown below and we can expect this number to
grow in the coming years.

Nintendo switch
The Nintendo switch is the newest console of the Nintendo family. Since its release in 2017 the
console has sold over 89 million copies due to the console providing consumers with portability as
well as a console in one. Its popularity grew because of 2 main factors, one being that it was
portable. Unlike the other consoles at the time and previous Nintendo consoles the switch didn’t
have much hardware to make it work. It came in a small package and was designed to allow gamers
to carry it with them in bags and even take it travelling along with them. This was an incredible
design as gamers were now able to play at home on the big screen as well as take it with them on a
day-to-day basis. The second factor which pushed the switch’s sales to increase so much were the
games that were available. Fan favourite titles like Zelda Breath of the Wild, Mario kart 8 deluxe and
animal crossing were available to purchase on release. Due to these reasons the switches sales
increased drastically over the years and now is expected last for another 5 years. “The switch should
last until at least 2026 when games stop getting released.” this graph below shows how's sales
reached 79 million copies in December 2020.
