, Question 1
1.1 Maggie, Levy and Lawrence completed the following calculation;
64 – (8 x 7) + 8
This is how they each did the calculation:
Maggie Levy Lawrence
64 – 8 x 7 + 8 64 – 8 x 7 + 8 64 – 8 x 7 + 8
= 56 x 15 = 56 x 7 + 8 = 64 – 56 + 8
= 840 = 392 + 8 =8+8
= 400 = 16
1.1.1 Analyse Maggie’s, Levy’s, and Lawrence’s calculations. Did any of the
learners do the calculations correctly?
Lawrence was the only one of the learners who has done the calculation
correctly. He used the BODMAS method correctly.
1.1.2 Identify the error(s) in the above calculations. Refer to the BODMAS rule
and give each learner feedback in the form of a brief explanation of the
mistakes that were exhibited.
BODMAS works as follow:
B – Brackets
O – order
D – Division
M – Multiplication
A – Addition
S - Subtraction
Maggie has not used the BODMAS rule correctly. She started with
subtraction, then addition, then multiplication. According to the BODMAS
method she should have started with multiplication, then addition and then
subtraction. That is why her answers is incorrect and got the answer 840.
Levy also didn’t follow the BODMAS rule correctly. He started with
subtraction, then multiplication and then addition. That is why he got to the
answer 400.
