Standard Solution and Carrying Out an
Acid-Base Titration
How to make up a Standard Solution:
- Weigh the sample bottle containing the solid on a 2 d.p. balance
- Transfer to beaker and reweigh sample bottle and record the difference in
mass
- Add distilled water to the beaker contains the sample
- Use a glass rod to stir to help dissolve the solid
- Pour solution into a 250cm³ volumetric flask via a filter funnel
- Rinse beaker and funnel and add washings from the beaker and glass rod to
the volumetric flask
- Make up to the 250cm³ mark with distilled water using a dropping pipette for
last few drops
- Invert flask several times to ensure uniform solution
What is meant by an alkali?
- It releases OH- ions in aqueous ions
Why is washing added into the beaker when preparing a
standard solution?
- Washing is added to make sure the correct number of moles are in the
solution
Why weigh by difference when preparing a standard solution?
- To find the exact amount the solid actually transferred to the beaker
How do we ensure the correct volume of 250cm³ is taken?
- The volumetric flask is filled up to the graduate mark when preparing a
solution
- The bottom of the meniscus is on the graduation mark when preparing a
standard solution to ensure the correct volume 250cm³ is measured
How to Carry out an Acid-Base Titration Where the Acid is the
Standard Solution:
- Rinse all equipment before start
- Fill the rinsed burette with acid using a filter funnel
- Rinse the pipette with alkali and then use a pipette filler to pipette a known
volume (25cm³) of alkali into a conical flask
- Add 2-3 drops of indicator
- Record the initial reading of the burette to 2d.p and to the nearest 0.05cm³
