Assignment: Regulation for Nursing Practice Staff Development Meeting The Differences between a Board of Nursing and a Professional Nursing Association Boards of nursing (BONs) do not have the mandate to support or oppose a bill during the legislative sessions and they are also barred from engaging in lobbying activities for nurses (Milstead, & Short, 2019). The roles that BONs play on matters of legislation are on the implementation and carrying out the policies and laws that are drafted and passed by the legislature. Boards of nursing also play the role of overseeing the application for licensure, renewal of licenses, issuance and have the mandate to pursue disciplinary actions to nurses that have violated the law (Maryland Board of Nursing, 2021). The other role of Boards of nursing is authorizing the utilization of licensing exams, approving educational programs for nurses, and also regulating the practice of advanced practice nursing. The BONs boards also set the minimum qualification for professionals working in the nursing field as a way of protecting the public from harm that can be caused by having unqualified people practicing in the nursing field. Boards of nursing also protect nurses by making sure that clear legal authorization is used in the nursing field and titles such as RNs, LPN/VNs, and APRNS are only used by nurses who are licensed. On contrary, nursing associations are private and professional organizations. Members of these associations pay for membership to benefit from the benefits that the association offers. Associations have the mandate to represent their member’s legislative matters and can therefore lobby for their members on matters dealing with a change or opposing certain nursing legislation This study source was downloaded by from CourseH on :57:36 GMT -05:00 ASSIGNMENT: REGULATION FOR NURSING PRACTICE STAFF DEVELOPMENT MEETING 3 for its members. Nursing associations can support legislation such as the one on expanding the role of nurses. A Description of the Board for My Region/Area The nursing board for my region is the Maryland board of nursing that currently has 14 board members (Maryland Board of Nursing, 2021). The board plays the role of overseeing the application for licensure, renewal of license, issuance and has the mandate to pursue disciplinary actions against violators of licensure provisions. The board also guides nursing practice by having procedures for reporting compliant and filing a Complaint against Advanced Practice Registered Nurse and Medication Technician (MT), Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), or (APRN) Registered Nurses (Maryland Board of Nursing, 2021). The board of nursing also has compliance and disciplinary department that hears and decides cases of violation of the nursing practice act and nursing standards by its members (Maryland Board of Nursing, 2021). The board also plays the role of approving nursing programs in Maryland State. Additionally, the board enforces and implements the provision of the Maryland nursing practice Act to ensure that healthcare organizations and medical professionals do not violate the provisions of the Act (Maryland Board of Nursing, 2021). The board also offers information to nurses about career opportunities such as the announcement posted on the board’s website on vacancies for certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) – Union Member Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) required by the CNA Advisory Committee. Who Is On the Maryland Board of Nursing The current members of the board are 14 members although the Nurse Practice Act of Maryland Health Occupations § 8-202 requires a minimum of 13 members on the board This study source was downloaded by from CourseH on :57:36 GMT -05:00 ASSIGNMENT: REGULATION F
