Entrepreneurs are those people who create their own businesses. For them to function
successfully, there is a need to possess characteristics that will make them have the
necessary skills to function in their role as entrepreneurs. This essay is going to provide
an overview of the attributes that may be necessary for entrepreneurs to possess
namely their personality, behavioral and cognitive attributes.
Personality attributes
Personality attributes that may be necessary for entrepreneurs to possess if they are to
have the necessary skills to function successfully as an entrepreneur include but not
limited to self-motivation, communication, discipline and self-awareness,
resourcefulness and empathy. According to www.managementstudyguide.com „ An
individual‟s behaviour towards others, attitude characteristics and mindset make his
personality”. Being an entrepreneur requires one to be disciplined because in most
cases there is no one to supervise how the entrepreneur is doing. (They are their own
bosses). Successful entrepreneurs such as Patrice Motsepe of South Africa and Strive
Masiyiwa, the owner of the biggest network provider company of Zimbabwe and
Botswana are examples of people who rose to fame through discipline. It requires
discipline to be the best network provider in the region. The urge to procrastinate can be
resisted because entrepreneurs have a sense of ownership to their businesses.
Self-awareness is another personality attribute that is necessary for entrepreneurs to
have so that they can have skills to operate successfully. If entrepreneurs are self-
aware, it helps them to own up to their strengths and weaknesses related to running
their business. (blog.hubspot.com). Application of meaningful feedback and an
increased ability to give and receive are as a result of entrepreneurs being self-aware.
Gary Vaynerchuck, a lifelong entrepreneur and social thought leader in America is
known to have said that “Self-awareness at its finest is accepting your shortcomings
and accentuating your strengths”. Therefore, it can be said that self-awareness is an
important personality attribute necessary for the success of entrepreneurs. If one
concentrates on what they are good at then their business will tick.
Communication skills place entrepreneurs in the spotlight in that if they listen to their
customers effectively, they can receive feedback from customers and in turn make
improvements to their service provision. This communication is a personality trait that
may be necessary for entrepreneurs to possess if they are to have the necessary skills
to function successfully as an entrepreneur. According to Makhbul and Hasun (2011),”
Entrepreneurs‟ ability to seize relevant information is found to be the most significant
