of Sheila and Gerald is seemed odd. Prior to his coming, Mr. Birling was telling Gerald of possible
knighthood he may receive from the royalties. He mentioned it would be only possible if they
don’t get into a police court or some scandal. This can be seen as foreshadowing, as they indeed
to get into a police scandal of a sort. Priestley introduced Inspector Goole as , “ The inspector
need not be a big man but he creates at once an impression of massiveness, solidity, and
purposefulness”. The author uses triplets to describe the inspector. “Solidity” can mean the
quality of being reliable. Priestley had described inspector giving the impression of massiveness,
but it’s not intimidating, rather you can trust him and he’s reliable. “Purposefulness” can show
that he does his work with determination and decisiveness. He is described further mentioned by
the author as, “He is a man in his fifties, dressed in a plain darkish suit of the period. He speaks
carefully, weightily and has a disconcerting habit of looking hard at the person he addresses
