Discuss 3 causes of workplace conflict The local 102 of the United Federation of Police Officers is asking the city management to work with them in order to resolve a major conflict in the workforce. The city’s mayor wants to significantly cut overtime pay to current police officers and hire 25 new officers instead. The police officers’ union argues that these officers have sacrificed their lives and deserve the overtime pay, which when taken away, it could cause financial hardship to the officers and their families. The argument between the local 102 of the United Federation of Police Officers and the Mayor is very clear. There is a lack of communication between the city management and the United Federation of Police officers, which is the main cause of these conflicts. The first workforce conflict is that the experienced officers who have been asked consistently to work overtime hours, have been enjoying the overtime pay and have adjusted their lifestyle accordingly. Cutting these overtime working hours, could result in financial hardship to the officers and their families. The second workforce conflict is that the experienced officers will have more nonpaid workload once the new officers are hired. The new officers will have to get trained by the experienced officers and the experienced officers will not receive any extra pay for the training. This could result in a significant drop in employee morale. The third workforce conflict is that the disappointed officers could start retaliating if the city management doesn’t meet with them and work out a plan that would gradually reduce their overtime.
