Positive feedback pushes an amplifier circuit toward instability (oscillations), whereas negative feedback pushes it in the other direction: toward stability. Negative feedback amplifier circuits are more stable, but they distort the input waveform less and can often magnify a wider range of frequencies. However, these benefits come at the cost of a lower gain.
