Immunodeficiency A state that results in a defect in
the immune response.
Primary- caused by genetic factors
and are rare.
Acquired- can be iatrogenic or
secondary to a disease.
Iatrogenic- commonly seen in
patients on corticosteroid therapy,
more severe forms seen in those
on immunosuppressants or bone
marrow transplant.
Any immunodeficiency that affects
the body's PMNs will have a
marked effect on the periodontal
condition of the patient.
Immunodeficient patients also tend
to be more prone to malignancy
and autoimmune disorders as they
may lose the regulatory cells of the
immune system.
Primary Rare Dental relevance- may be on constant
antibiotics, may have increased periodontal
immunodeficiency
<100 recognised primary disease due to leucocyte suppression and
, immunodeficiencies may be in receipt of a bone marrow
transplant.
All due to abnormalities of various
genes.
Categorised by which immune cell
is affected.
Also seen with other chromosomal
abnormalities- such as Down
Syndrome.
Severe variations can cause early
deaths.
Warning signs-
8 or more ear infections in
a year
2 or more serious
infections in a year
2 or more pneumonias in a
year
Recurrent deep skin or
organ abscesses
More than 2 deep seated
infections
Antibiotics for more than 2
months with no resolution
Surgical intervention for
chronic infection.
Persistent candidiasis
Failure to thrive
Family history
