A1 Recruitment and Selection

A1 - Evaluating the recruitment and
selection process of a large business
(ASOS)

P1 and M1

Introduction

Recruitment is the process of finding and attracting in the business people
capable and interested in filling vacancies. Selection is the process by which those
who will receive the job offer are chosen from the recruited candidates.

ASOS is one of the largest online fashion retailer in the UK, selling a big variety
of clothing, footwear, accessories and cosmetics. Their target market is young
people. The retailer was born in London, in 2000, and currently sells items from
hundreds of famous brands, offering transportation to over 190 countries.

, A1 Recruitment and Selection

ASOS currently has over 4000 employees, being a very large company with
many branches in the UK.

Their recruitment process is well organised as they hire almost permanently.
There are a number of reasons why vacancies occur and a recruitment process is
needed.

 New warehouses are opened – When ASOS opens new offices, warehouses,
branches, new staff needs to be hired, because new jobs are created. The
demand for employees is very high in a newly opened branch.
 Business growth - It creates more jobs to be able to meet customer demands,
to satisfy the clients’ needs and wants in order the business to be successful.
If the business sells more products/offers more services to satisfy the
customers, more people need to be hired because there will be more work to
be done.
 Promoting employees – If a person who has a certain position (e.g. team
leader) is promoted to a higher position (e.g. manager), his previous position
will be vacant and new people will have to be hired.
 Systems and job roles are changing - Due to the imminent innovations that
occurs, a business changes its system over time. For example, a few decades
ago there was no need for people who deal with computer programming or
mobile applications, today they have some of the most important roles in the
company. A business is constantly developing due to the evolution of
technology and new job roles that did not exist in the past appear. Newly
trained staff for certain changes is required.
 Staff turnover - When certain employees leave the company, vacancies are
created which must be filled as soon as possible so that the business is not
affected. The reasons why employees leave the company may be: personal
or health problems, leaving the country, desire to try other jobs, new
opportunities that are offered to them etc.
 Seasonal fluctuations – For example, before Christmas or Easter, ASOS has
a massive need for people for the demand to be met.
 Retirement of employees creates new vacancies.
