environment.
2) Norms and values:
Written and unwritten standerds
off correct, desired behavior.
3) Basic assumptions:
The perception of the world and
the judgements we make about
others that are shaped off
distorted by our own culture.
They are abstract and invisible.

“Culture is the collective programming of the mind, which distinguishes the members
of one group of people from another”
We are programmed through upbringing, socialization, norms and values, and
perception.
Upbringing:
Example; Shaking hands, It’s repeated and drilled so often that you end up thinking
shaking hands is normal.
Socialization:
A lot of things we learn by interacting with others. We are als programmed through
norms and values. Example; if you value showing respect for older people and the

, norm is to give your seat to an elderly person on the bus, you will feel good when
you give up your seat.
Perception:
Just by looking around us we make conscious or unconscious choices about how we
want to behave.
There are three levels of programming:

Communication:
The change of meaning
Intercultural communication:
Communication between sources and receivers from different cultures and good
intercultural communication requires an intercultural sensitive attitude, knowledge
and skills. Because culture has its impact on every point in the communication
circles.
Noise
Noise is anything that distorts or blocks the message.
External noise aka physical noise:
Interference from the environment. External noise makes it difficult for the
receiver to understand you. Example: people talking loud, person in front of you
wearing a hat.
Internal noise aka psychological noise:
