I will compare Switzerland’s healthcare system to the healthcare system of the U.S. for
this task.
A2.Access
In 1996 Switzerland mandated universal coverage. Individuals residing in Switzerland
are required to purchase statutory health insurance (SHI)[Cam151]. Comprehensive coverage for
all. Individuals pay an annual premium, have an annual deductible and a pay a 10% coinsurance
on all services with an annual set maximum[Cam151]. The government provides income based
subsidies to individuals to cover premiums and states cover health insurance expenses of
recipients of supplementary old age benefits[Cam151]. Policies apply to individuals and are not
sponsored by employers. Babies are covered at birth but to continue coverage parents must take
out separate policy within 3 months of birth [Exp12]. Separate policies must be purchased for
dependents[Cam151]. All individuals, children, unemployed and retired have coverage. There
are virtually no uninsured residents and all have equal access to healthcare.
In contrast, the U.S. in 2010 passed The Affordable Care Act (ACA) which established a
shared responsibility between government, employers and individuals to ensure affordable
healthcare to all Americans[The151]. However, even with the passage of ACA healthcare
coverage remains fragmented and wide gaps in insured rates are found across the U.S.[The151].
For most Americans health insurance is tied to their employment and the loss of employment
means the loss of healthcare coverage. Leaving many unemployed without insurance and without
access to healthcare. Children can be covered under parents insurance plan up to a certain age
with certain criteria being met, such as being a student. Low-income children are often covered
