, FAMILY ASSESSMENT 2

Family Assessment

Families are the basic social units and they usually determine the distinctive behaviors of

its members. Nurses must possess the essential capacity to assess the family’s health pattern and

decide whether or not they need an urgent intervention. Such an assessment is generated using

Doctor Marjory Gordon’s functional health pattern that formulates interview questions based on

variables like the value/health perception, nutrition, sleep/rest, elimination, activity/exercise,

cognitive, sensory-perception, self-perception, role relationship, sexuality, and coping. To

internalize the essence of the functional assignment, this paper selected Jones family for

assessment.

Structure of the Family

The Jones family structure can be described as a basic nuclear family. The couple is

legally married, however, the family lives independent of the extended family. The Jones family

is a young and small unit of five. Mr. and Mrs. Jones are 42 and 37 years, respectively. The

eldest of their children, Abigail, is 16. Shaw, 13, is the second born, whereas, Jane, the last-born

is 4. Abigail and Shaw go to school, however, Jane is still in pre-school. The family is religious,

and they attend St. Peter’s Cathedral every Sunday. Mr. Jones is a software engineer, whereas

Mrs. Jones is a stay-at-home mom that works as an online freelance writer. In terms of social

status, the Jones family is a middle-class family.

Summary of Findings

and enhance the family’s state of health. In summarizing the findings to the interview, some of

the areas in which the family demonstrates positive findings include nutrition, activity/exercise,
