A Review of the American Nurses Association

A Review of the American Nurses Association

The field of healthcare is dynamic and has changed significantly over the years. As a

result, nursing practitioners and other related practitioners are expected to keep in touch with

such changes to enhance service delivery. One of the most effective ways for nurses to remain in

touch with these changes is by joining nursing organizations. The American Nurses Association

(ANA) is the most prominent nursing organization in the world, representing millions of

members. As a result, this paper will review the ANA, its benefits for the nurses, and the ability

to help nurses advance in their careers.

ANA is one of the nursing advocacy organizations in the country. It is meant to advance,

as well as protect the interests of registered nursing professionals in the country. It is primarily

involved in the process of establishing the standards for the nursing practice, advancing the

economic welfare of the nurses, as well as promote the rights of these practitioners in their

respective workplace. ANA envisions “all nurses as a powerful, unified force in engaging

consumers and transforming health and health care.” The association’s mission is “nurses

advancing our profession to improve health for all” (American Nurses Association, 2019).

Registered nurses (RNs) that join such an organization expects to gain significantly from being a

member since it would advocate for their needs. In this case, the perks of being a member of

ANA include the opportunity to advance careers, staying in touch with the current change in the

field, saving money, connecting with other RNs in the country, and getting their plies heard and

acted upon (American Nurses Association, 2019). Individual members of this association also

benefit from being represented in the statehouse on critical issues affecting them, they gain local

networking opportunities, benefit from job networking, and also get the chance for education and

career development (American Nurses Association, 2019). Though these benefits vary depending

on the nurse’s state, the perks expected are reason enough to enroll.
