Advanced Practice Nursing Role of the Family Nurse Practitioner

ADVANCED PRACTICE NURSING ROLE 2 The purpose of this paper is to investigate the advanced practice nursing role selected by the author at South University. The findings will also be summarized in this paper. A brief historical development of the advanced practice nursing role of the nurse practitioner will be explored. This paper will also relate how the role of family nurse practitioner impacts patient health and outcomes. The author has selected a conceptual framework/model that is applicable to the role of family nurse practitioner and will discuss how it is related to this role as supported by literature. Clinical Role The author is currently enrolled in the Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) program at South University. The author’s journey that led him to this program has been a long, tortuous one. As an emergency medical technician, the author’s scope of practice was extremely limited. But, the impact on positive patient outcomes that this initial treatment afforded was realized. The author also realized that in order to have an even greater impact on patient health and outcomes, he should pursue higher education to increase his clinical knowledge and skills. Oliver, Pennington, Revelle, and Rantz (2014) discovered in their study that there is a significant relationship between the full practice of nurse practitioners (NPs) and decreased hospitalization rates and improved health outcomes of Medicare and Medicaid patients (p.447).
