Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)

What does depression feel like?
"You don't want to live but you don't want to die. You don't want to talk to anyone but you feel
very lonely. You wake up in the morning and simply wait for the night to come." (reddit user
881diamond)

Check out this excellent comic (Links to an external site.) demonstrating what it's like living with
depression and anxiety.

Diagnostic criteria for MDD include sad mood, lack of interest or pleasure in activities, physical
changes such as low energy and sleep disturbance, and cognitive changes such as negative
thoughts about oneself and difficulty making decisions. Sadness and lack of interest alone can
fairly accurately detect depression.

Course and Recurrence
Depressive disorders can occur across the lifespan although they are especially common between
ages 20 and 45. Episodes can last a couple of weeks to years. In most cases, episodes are
recurrent, with an average of 5 to 6 lifetime episodes. The U.S. has one of the highest lifetime
rates of depression, along with France and the Netherlands.

Gender Differences
Men and women can experience depression in different ways, and although they also share many
common signs and symptoms, a better understanding of the differences may help those with
depression, researchers say.

Subgroups of Major Depressive Disorder

Of the 9 different specifiers available in the DSM-5, the following 6 are commonly used to
describe the current or most recent episode of MDD:
