Unit 11 class notes
Components of a circulatory system
● Heart (pump)
● Arteries
● Veins
● Capillaries
● Blood
● Lymph vessels (drain excess tissue fluid from the tissues)
Function = provide protection against infection (globulins antibodies)(white blood cells)
= provides blood clotting (platelets and fibrinogen)
= thermoregulation (vasoconstriction/vasodilation)(sweat comes from plasma)
Albumin is a plasma protein that helps absorb water by osmosis - important in
1)reabsorbing tissue fluid 2)in the kidney.
Topics to be covered
1. Heart structure and function
2. Cardiac cycle
3. Control of heartbeat
4. Blood vessels properties and roles
5. Blood pressure and rate of flow difference around the body
6. Blood structure and function
● Septum = Separates the left and right side of the heart and prevents
deoxygenated and oxygenated blood from mixing
● Heart strings = contains proteins which hold down the valves so that it doesn’t
turn inside out preventing blood from flowing the wrong way.
● Valves = preventing backflow of blood
Cardiac cycle
1. Systole - the walls of the atria and ventricles contract (when the heart pumps)
2. Atrial systole - is when the atria contract.
3. Ventricular systole - is when the ventricles contract.
