Testing for starch
Method
1. Put a small sample of each substance into each well of a white spotting tray
2. Add a few drops of iodine
3. If the substance has starch present, the iodine drops will turn black
4. If the substance does not have starch present, the iodine drops will maintain the
same colour - which is reddish

Testing for reducing sugars
Method
1. Mix 1cm3 of sugar solution with 1cm3 of benedict’s solution (this is copper
sulphate solution)
2. Place the test tubes into the water bath with a temperature of 95 degrees celsius
for a few minutes
3. Remove test tubes
4. Allow them to cool
5. Note colours seen in a results table
6. If there is a presence of a reducing sugar, the colour will change to a brick red
