Uphold quality education amidst challenges
As the constitution explicitly states in Article XIV Section 1: “the State shall protect and
promote the right of all citizens to quality education at all levels, and shall take appropriate steps
to make such education accessible to all.” With or without pandemic, schools are compelled to
provide and deliver quality learning which every learner deserves.
Before pandemic, the quality of learning delivery has already been in big question after
the PISA 2018 result shocked the whole nation. The Programme for International Students
Assessment (PISA) results of 2018 has put the Philippines’ Educational system into the hot
water. The results show a devastatingly very low performance of learners in reading,
mathematics and sciences – placing Philippines last out of the 58 other countries who
participated, and second to the last in Science and mathematics.
These demoralizing truth results only show that Filipino learners are not at par anymore
with the learners in international stage. Then comes the unrelenting COVID-19 which also
hindered the conduct of face to face classes and possible intervention program for two school
years now.
With these at hand, teachers are expected to cope with these challenges in a moment
and address the most challenging hurdle the Philippine educational system has ever
experienced. After the numerous virtual conferences, workshop and trainings capacitating
teachers to survive this test, teachers are now expected to be creative, critical at learners’
needs and provide teaching and learning in most convenient way for the learners.
More campaign and advocacies are created as an intervention to learning and to at least
alleviate to the gap experienced by the learners. It is interesting to note that teachers’ being in
the forefronts of DepEd every big campaign, they take more responsibility and accountability in
truly making is successful and worthy for its cause.
Guisguis NHS is also doing its part by enjoining its parents and external stakeholders in
making reading a habit through Project ACE Reading Amidst Pandemic (Advocating
Commitment and Enhancement of Reading Amidst Pandemic) and Project ACT with School
Partners (Amplifying Commitment & Tie-ups with School Partners) which are all gearing up
towards achieving good partnerships and effective teaching and learning delivery.
Aiming for quality education has always been the first priority of every school, but it is
always easier said than done. With the looming crisis of COVID-19, this noble aim was made
even harder to reach. Thus, teachers who pledged to make a difference in the lives of their
learners must never lose the passion in creating various ways and means to meet this challenge
with a faithful heart, while abiding by the Philippine Constitutions’ mandate of promoting quality
and accessible education for all.
