Cell culture: Definition and History
- Cell culture: removal of cells from their natural environment, and their propagation and cultivation under
controlled, defined (in vitro) conditions

Significant landmarks in cell culture

Cell culture is used to:
- Study basic biological processes
- Vaccine production
- Test drug metabolism and toxicity
- Production of antibodies
- Study of gene function

, - Generate artificial tissues (e.g. artificial skin)
- Synthesize of biological compounds (e.g. therapeutic proteins)

Types of cells in cell culture

Primary Cells:
1. Origin: derived from excised tissue
a. Mechanical and/or enzymatic treatment to obtain single-cell suspension
b. May contain also other than the target cell types (disadvantage)
2. Characteristics: Retention of in vivo characteristics (advantage)
a. However, the cells lose their characteristics (aka Phenotype) over time (disadvantage)
3. Lifespan: : limited (disadvantage)

Primary cells II

Cell lines: Characteristics
- Consist of a single cell type (advantage), unless contaminated
- Indefinite propagation
