multiple representations to communicate mathematical ideas. Use the
topic “Interpreting data” to illustrate your understanding of this statement
(refer to the CAPS document on page 31 for more information). Consider

The topic interpreting data can be used in multiple representations. We
can critically read and interpret data represented in words, pictographs,
bar graphs and pie charts.
- We can interpret data in words to communicate the mathematical
ideas.
- A pictograph is a representation of data using images or symbols.
They help in laying the foundation for data interpretation based on
pictorial information. They are useful for the purpose of quick and
clear understanding and also for making comparisons. The same type
of pictures or symbols is used to represent or number of objects.
- Bar graphs are used to show relationships between different data
series that are independent of each other. We can use bar graphs to
interpret data. We look for differences in the height of the bars. The
bars show the value for the groups. We can also compare bars within
the clusters to understand the proportions of subcategories within
each main group.
- Pie charts are designed to visualise how a whole is divided into
various parts. When we interpret a pie chart we compare groups.
When we interpret one pie chart, we can look for differences in the
size of the slice. The size of the slice shows the proportion of
observations that are in that group. When we compare multiple pie
charts, we look for differences in the size of slices for the same
categories in all the pie charts.
