benefit from assessment and explaining why they benefit from it.

• Learners:
Learners know very well about what they are being assessed.
However, they should be informed of the way that they are being
assessed, they type of mathematics that they will be expected to do,
the criteria that their performance is being judged on, and what the
consequences of the assessment are. They should also receive proper
feedback on their performance.

• Teachers:
It is the teachers’ responsibility to assess the learners’ performance.
They should do this in the classroom, throughout specific units of
instruction, periodically throughout the course of the term or year, and
by making institutional choices.

• The public:
It is the public’s need and right to know how learners performing in
school.

1.2 Discuss FOUR types of assessment that are stipulated in your CAPS
document. In your discussion, define each of the four types of
assessment, give an example of each and explain when is it used.

• Baseline assessment:
Baseline assessment is used to evaluate learners’ existing ideas,
knowledge, experience, and skills, and to assist in determining the
levels of demands that need to be incorporated into the learning plan. It
enables teachers to recognize learners with special needs early in the
learning programme. Readiness tests for school beginners are an
example of this type of assessment. Baseline assessment is used at
the beginning of a new topic to establish what the learner already
knows.

• Formative assessment:
Formative assessment is assessment of learning which gives rise to
process analysis. It enables teachers to advise learners to plan future
learning and is designed to observe and support learning progress.
This type of assessment assists teachers in determining learners’
needs and strengths and gives effective feedback to allow learners to
take relevant action. Informal tests are an example of this type of
assessment. It occurs throughout the learning process.
