Bronfenbrenner ecological framework can be a useful tool in explaining the possible causative factors that result in child sexual, emotional, and physical abuse. The model aims to identify a range of factors that operate at different levels, when a connection of child abuse is identified and further examined, it also allows the clinician to explore the extent to which the characteristic exists at both an individual level as well as in the broader community. Child abuse should not only be viewed according to the individual parental psychopathology or individual stresses, but rather take into consideration the context of the family, community, and society. Belsky postulates that there are many different interactive pathways that result in child maltreatment, but that maltreatment only occurs when stressors outweigh supporting factors. Research has also found that child abuse is influenced by the parents childhood, current dysfunctional family systems and stressed. When a parent has a history of child abuse, there are deemed a higher risk 2 abuse their own children. Empirical studies have estimated that 20 to 30% of individuals we were abused as children well abuse as adults. At present the relationship between stress and parenting outcomes our intricate and poorly understood.
