Urinary tract infections (UTI) have long been known to have a ravaged healthcare system and
have been known to be the most common Healthcare-Associated Infection (HAI), with most of
these problems occurring after placement of the convenient, uncomfortable and sometimes
unnecessary and easily forgotten urinary catheter. There are an estimated 449,334 CAUTI cases
annually with an estimated additional cost of US$749–1007 for every admission. In 2008,
unsurprisingly CAUTIs were ranked first as the hospital-acquired condition that was selected for
non-payment by Medicare and has been targeted for complete removal. These government
initiatives reignited public interest in the prevention of CAUTI. With the need to reduce the
CAUTI cases and eventually eliminating them, there was a need to develop an evidence-based
protocol with clinician expertise that integrates patient data as a problem-solving approach.
