HUM 303 Week 1 Discussion: Ancient Art Eastern and Western Origins - 2021 Lehigh University Week 1: Ancient Art: Eastern and Western Origins - Discussion The Value of the Humanities (graded) What is the value of studying the humanities in a business or technical curriculum? How might a topic such as ancient art enhance contemporary life? Responses Response Author Date/Time Architecture Bradley Ward 7/5/2021 12:06:29 PM Ancient architecture can be very important for a engineering major to study. This is because we can learn how to design new architecture from looking at the ancient architecture. We can not only learn what things that we shouldn't do with our design, but also what things were done right all those years ago. RE: Architecture David VanBeuge 7/6/2021 5:21:36 AM Bradley, I agree with your statement about how ancient architecture can be important for an engineering major to study. In addition to what you had to say I think that being able to improve on what was built then and incorporating modern technologies to it improves the structure. For example, the Coliseum that was built in Rome was constructed very well and and served it's purpose and from that most of the sporting venues that we have now resemble it. In addition to being similar, we have added new technologies to it such as domes, or retractable roofs. RE: Architecture Professor Clarke-Peterson 7/12/2021 10:52:53 PM Oh David! The Coliseum is a great example, we will be discussing that in week 2! RE: Architecture Martin Velasquez 7/10/2021 8:16:37 PM Yes, that is definitely agreeable Bradley. In addition, I have found that formally similar to what you said you may also be able to see how exactly the ancient architecture was built so well to the point that some of those buildings or whatever else people may call them are still standing till this day so this definitely means that there is ways to have some built so strong which may last a person years without it breaking down unless it is hit by something really strong like a bomb but other then that it is really amazing. The Value of the Humanities Darcy Baggs 7/5/2021 4:30:36 PM After reading our text it seems to me that one of the main advantages for studying the humanities is the use of critical thinking. Since we are looking at different cultures/time periods and how language, philosophy, religion, and art evolved there is a lot that can be debated. By studying the humanities it allows one to formulate their own opinions and examine all of these things from different angles. Not only is this beneficial in any career field, but the ability to see things from different perspectives and create one’s own ideas is something greatly useful in life.
