Basic Equipment:  Cleaning – maintaining a clean and sterile environment is essential for our health and safety  Autoclave: a tool using heat, pressure, and steam to sterilize lab equipment before or after use - 125o C - uses hot steam, which is more efficient than dry hot air - to prevent injury from hot steam, one must take caution when opening by: ensuring it is depressurized, opening slowly, wearing thermal gloves  Growing – the bacteria/pathogens we observe  Fixed incubator: chamber with an airtight metal door to seal and keep conditions dark - 37o C  Shaker incubator: used to take growth media (liquid nutrient broth) to inoculate bacteria - it shakes and rotates culture in a swirling fashion to help aerate it and optimally grow - 37o C  Visualizing  Microscopy: utilize different parts of the microscope for optimal view of bacteria
