microbiology Quizz 1 (with answers)
question 10 (TCO 2) 4) Both mitochondria and chloroplasts have inner membranes with much greater surface area than their outer membranes. Discuss the contribution of the extensive inner membranes to the roles of these organelles. (10 points) Your Answer: Both the mitochondria and chloroplasts are to be considered as primitive organelles, they are able to sustain life, energy production, synthesis and transport of material and maintaining their structure. The mitochondrial membrane consists of small structures called Cristae. Cristae is the primary site for ATP synthesis and the maintenance of the proton gradient in the mitochondria. Due to the fact that cells do require a lot of energy that is why there are multiple mitochondria's in a cell. As for the chloroplast inner membrane this is the primary site for photosynthesis. The inner membrane has the ability to signal fatty acids and lipids. One of the major functions of this inner membrane is the role in signaling transduction.
