ASSIGNMENT BRIEF: WORKBOOK

Scenario: You have been selected to take part in the recruitment process of a
large Tour Operator that is looking for Travel Organisers/Consultants who have
the potential to progress fast up the ladder in the company and fill up
managerial positions. To assess the calibre of each applicant in the last stage of
this process, the company requires the production of a short portfolio in the form
of a Workbook with 3 tasks to be completed.

Task 1

1. You are required to analyse the recent trends and developments on the Tour
Operators industry. Select one of them and answer the following: (1.1)
a) Briefly explain what your chosen trend is.
b) How does it affect the Tour Operator industry? You are to mention both
positive and negative points.
Expected word count: approx. 200-250 words

Examples of trends and development: changing trends in holidays, expansion of the cruise
market, environmental awareness of Tour operators, and role of trade bodies and
emergence of e commerce.

One of the new trends in the Tour Operation industry is Responsible Tourism.

Responsible tourism is a way to be aware of the environmental problems caused by
pollution. Many travellers opted on choosing to book a holiday which creates fewer carbon
emissions. For this kind of trend, the traveller is happy on doing volunteering jobs as it is
beneficial for developing countries and it helps the host community (www.sustaining
Tourism, 2014).

Responsible Tourism affects the Tour Operator industry by having the responsibility on
maximising economic benefit for the host country. One of the strategies is to invest in the

, local community by helping on protection areas where customer visit. It is a significant
role for Tour Operator industry to training and employing local staff as it is contributed
economy for the host country. Another good action is to buy local supplies which will
reduce carbon emissions thus improve global warming. (www.responsible travel, n. d.).

Positive points:

- Responsible tourism destinations have little inflation as usually are developed
countries. For the tour operator is an advantage as it gains value money on the exchange
rate.

- Tour operator doesn’t need to build hotels as the traveller is happy to be host in local
families.

- The tour operator doesn’t need to export products and food which customers are
familiar to, as their happy on using destination products and eat destination food.

Negative points:

-To preserve the place the tour operator can send to the destination only a certain
number of tourists. Because the number of tourists cannot reach a big number and
frequencies of travelling has to be limited, the tour operator loses money. If lots of planes
go to that destination, the carbon emission will create pollution for that destination.

-The tour operator can’t build big infrastructure like hotels as it would change the
landscape of the place and can change the social status of the host population as the
inflation may rise. Therefore, this is a case of loss of profits.

-Another negative point is that if the tour operator needs to build some accommodations,
these accommodations have to be small as doesn’t have to damage the landscape of the
environment and it require to be made with ecosystem regulation ex: solar pane. This
climate regulation for the responsible travel make extra spending money for the tour
operator(www.sustaining tourism,2014)
