Caring for Women Experiencing Hysterectomy
Hysterectomy, which is removal of the uterus, is one of the most common surgical procedures performed in women. The incidence of inpatient hysterectomy procedures has steadily declined from a high of almost 700,000 in 2002 to around 430,000 in 2010 (Wright et al., 2013). By 2014, the rates of outpatient laparoscopic and robotic-assisted surgery had increased by 44% (Moawad et al., 2014). Improvements in therapeutic options including medications, increased use of minimally invasive nonsurgical techniques, and alterations in the patterns of referrals for high-risk patients have contributed to these changes.
