NETA Group Exercise Certification (National Exercise Trainers Association)
NETA Group Exercise Certification is a group fitness instructor credential issued by the National Exercise Trainers Association (NETA), a nonprofit fitness education organization founded in 1977. The certification is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA), and NETA is one of only a few organizations holding NCCA accreditation for its group exercise certification. There are no strict eligibility barriers: no college degree, science background, or prior teaching experience is required. The certification exam consists of 120 multiple-choice questions to be completed within 120 minutes, with a passing rate of 81% in 2023 and a retake fee of $129. The certification is valid for two years, and recertification requires 20 continuing education credits (CECs) along with current adult CPR certification (including hands-on skills assessment). Exam content covers anatomy, kinesiology, physiology and nutrition, cueing, choreography and music skills, communication and behavior change, and components of physical activity and fitness. NETA also offers live/virtual review workshops (approximately $299–$349, including study packages and exam) as well as self-study options.
