CONSTITUTION OF ALLOYS AND PHASE DIAGRAMS
2 – marks question and answers
1. What is the definition of an alloy?
An alloy is a mixture of two or more elements, where at least one is a metal, combined to achieve specific
properties like strength, corrosion resistance, or conductivity.
Examples: Steel (iron + carbon), Brass (copper + zinc).
2. What is solid solution?
A solid solution is a homogeneous mixture of two or more elements in a solid state, where atoms of one
element occupy lattice sites of another element.
Types:
1. Substitutional: Atoms replace each other in the lattice.
2. Interstitial: Smaller atoms fit into lattice gaps.
3. Differentiate substitional and interstitial solid solution with examples?
1. Substitutional Solid Solution:
- Atoms of solute replace solvent atoms in the lattice.
- Example: Brass (Cu-Zn), where Zn atoms substitute Cu atoms.
2. Interstitial Solid Solution:
- Small solute atoms occupy interstitial spaces in the solvent lattice.

, - Example: Steel (Fe-C), where C atoms fit into Fe lattice gaps.
Key difference: Atom placement in the lattice structure.
4. What is phase diagram?
A phase diagram is a graphical representation showing the equilibrium phases of a system (often alloy) at
different temperatures, compositions, and pressures.
It indicates:
- Solidus and liquidus lines
- Phase boundaries
- Equilibrium phases present
Helps predict microstructure and properties during processing.
5. Define eutectic reaction.
A eutectic reaction is a phase transformation where a liquid solution solidifies into a mixture of two solid
phases at a specific temperature (eutectic temperature) and composition (eutectic composition).
Liquid → Solid1 + Solid2
Example: Lead-Tin alloy system.
6. Define eutectoid reaction.
A eutectoid reaction is a solid-state phase transformation where a single solid phase transforms into a
mixture of two solid phases at a specific temperature and composition.
Solid1 → Solid2 + Solid3
Example: Steel (Fe-C system), where austenite → ferrite + cementite.
7. State and explain lever rule.
Lever Rule
The lever rule is used in phase diagrams to determine the relative amounts of phases present at a given
composition and temperature.
Explanation:
For a two-phase region, the fraction of each phase is inversely proportional to the distance from the overall
composition to the phase boundary.

, Mathematically:
- Fraction of phase α = (Cβ - C0) / (Cβ - Cα)
- Fraction of phase β = (C0 - Cα) / (Cβ - Cα)

C0: Overall composition, Cα and Cβ: Compositions of phases α and β.

Helps quantify phase proportions.
8. What are the possible microstructures of iron and steel?
1. Ferrite: Soft, ductile, BCC iron phase.
2. Austenite: FCC iron phase, stable at high temperatures.
3. Cementite: Hard, brittle iron carbide (Fe3C).
4. Pearlite: Lamellar structure of ferrite and cementite.
5. Martensite: Hard, metastable phase formed by rapid quenching.
6. Bainite: Needle-like structure formed by isothermal transformation.
9. What is the basic classification of steel?
1. Carbon Steels: Low, medium, high carbon content.
2. Alloy Steels: Contains alloying elements (e.g., Cr, Ni, Mo).
3. Stainless Steels: High chromium content for corrosion resistance.
4. Tool Steels: Hard, wear-resistant for tools and dies.
13 and 15 marks question and answers
10. Draw iron-iron carbide equilibrium diagram and mention the important composition
andtemperature.
