•What is the purpose of pap smears

A Papanicolaou test, or Pap test, is done during a pelvic examination. The Pap test involves
collecting cells from the cervix using a brush or spatula. The sample is evaluated in the
laboratory to detect abnormal cervical cells or human papillomavirus, which causes cervical
cancer.

•At what age do we begin routine pap screening?

Current recommendations for female clients between the ages of 21 to 29 are to encourage
an annual pelvic examination to be performed and a Pap test completed at least every 3
years. Recommended screening options for female clients between the ages of 30 to 65
include obtaining a Pap test only every 3 years, a Pap test and human papillomavirus (HPV)
test every 5 years, or only an HPV test every 5 years. Clients over the age of 65 and who
have had negative Pap or HPV testing for 10 years, or who have had a hysterectomy or had
their cervix removed, may cease cervical cancer screening.
