ELECTRIC FORCES AND FIELDS
1 COULOMB’S LAW
The law states that the
electric force, F, between two
stationary charged particles
F = kₑ |q₁| |q₂|
q₁ and q₂, separated by a
distance r has the magnitude: r²
|q₁| is the magnitude of charge q₁ in coulombs.
|q₂| is the magnitude of charge q₂ in coulombs.
kₑ = Coulomb constant = 8.99 × 10⁹ N·m²/C²
2 ELECTRIC FIELDS
When force F acts on a charge q,
an electric field exists in space. E = F/q
For a positive point charge, the field lines point outward. For a
negative point charge, the field lines point inward.
The magnitude of the electric field caused by a point charge
at distance r from it:
E = kₑ |q|
r²
