,Before you start
This guide was written to help South African learners prepare for the K53 learner's licence test and the
practical driving licence test. It explains the official rules in plain, everyday English.
Important: please read
This is an independent study guide. It is not an official publication and is not affiliated with or endorsed
by the Department of Transport, the RTMC, NaTIS or any driving licence testing centre (DLTC).
Road traffic law, test procedures and fees can change, and fees differ between provinces and
municipalities. Always confirm fees and booking details with your DLTC or on the official NaTIS site
(online.natis.gov.za) before you go.
The rules in this guide are based on the National Road Traffic Act 93 of 1996, the National Road Traffic
Regulations, 2000, the SADC Road Traffic Signs Manual and the K53 practical test manuals. The law
always wins if anything here differs from it.
Nothing in this guide replaces lessons with a qualified, registered driving instructor.

, CHAPTER 1
Welcome: how to use this guide
Getting your licence is one of the biggest steps towards independence: getting to work, to class, to
family, or starting a business that needs wheels. The good news is that the K53 tests are very passable.
Most people who fail don't fail because the tests are hard. They fail because they didn't prepare
properly or because nerves made them rush. This guide helps you with both.
The two tests you need to pass
Learner's licence test Driving licence test (K53)
What it is A multiple-choice theory test A practical test in your own car, truck or
on your motorcycle
What it covers Rules of the road, road Pre-trip inspection, yard manoeuvres,
signs/signals/markings, vehicle controls and (for cars and trucks) a road test in
traffic
Where A driving licence testing centre (DLTC) A DLTC with a test yard/track and test
routes
What you get A learner's licence, valid for 24 months A driving licence (a card), renewed every
5 years
A simple 14-day study plan
Spend about 45 to 60 minutes a day. Short, regular sessions work better than one long cram session the
night before.
