GRADE 12 MASTERCLASS
Revised, integrated edition | Theory • Formal proofs • Diagrams • Worked riders • Memoranda
Editorial note: This edition replaces the earlier inconsistent riders and proof explanations with newly
checked statements and coherent givens. Diagrams are schematic, not to scale. This is an independent
CAPS-focused learning resource; confirm the current prescribed proof list with your teacher and DBE
guidance.

Part 1 | Geometry theory and exam applications
1. The proof-writing method
Step What the learner should write
Given List facts stated in the question; mark only those facts on the
diagram.
Required Write the precise statement to prove.
Plan Choose a theorem whose conclusion matches the required result.
Working Use a statement-and-reason sequence. State constructions
explicitly.
Check Verify correspondence, segments, arcs, angle vertices and units.
2. Lines and triangles
Condition Valid conclusion / reason
Parallel lines cut by a transversal Alternate and corresponding angles equal; co-interior angles
supplementary.
Grade 12 Euclidean Geometry | Revised study guide 1
, Condition Valid conclusion / reason
Intersecting lines Vertically opposite angles equal.
Straight line / point Angles sum to 180° / 360°.
Triangle Interior angles sum to 180°; exterior angle equals the sum of
remote interior angles.
Isosceles triangle Angles opposite equal sides are equal; converse also holds.
Congruent triangles SSS, SAS, ASA/AAS or RHS; write corresponding vertices in order.
Similar triangles AA (or AAA), or proportional corresponding sides; write correct
matching ratios.
Proportionality theorem and midpoint theorem
A
D E
B C
Figure 1. D lies on AB, E lies on AC, and DE is parallel to BC.
When DE ∥ BC, AD/DB = AE/EC. Also AD/AB = AE/AC = DE/BC. Converse: if D and E lie on AB and AC and
AD/DB = AE/EC, then DE ∥ BC.
If D and E are midpoints of AB and AC, then DE ∥ BC and DE = BC/2.

, 3. Circle geometry and tangents
O
A M B
Figure 2. OM is perpendicular to chord AB. Therefore AM = MB.
Condition Conclusion
OM from centre O perpendicular to chord AB AM = MB. Converse: the centre-to-midpoint line is perpendicular
to the chord.
Same chord, vertices in same segment Angles at the circumference are equal.
Same chord, vertices in opposite segments Angles at the circumference are supplementary.
Angle at centre and circumference on same arc Angle at centre = twice angle at circumference.
Diameter as a chord Angle subtended at circumference = 90°.
Cyclic quadrilateral Opposite interior angles sum to 180°.
Prove cyclic quadrilateral Converse: show opposite angles supplementary, or exterior angle
equal to opposite interior angle.
Tangent at A, circle centre O OA is perpendicular to tangent at A.
Tangent–chord theorem Angle between a specified tangent ray and chord equals the
angle in the corresponding alternate segment.

, Figure 3. The vertical line is tangent at A; OA is perpendicular to it. B and P lie on the circle.
Essential distinction: Angles BAC and BDC are equal if A and D are on the same side of chord BC. If they
are on opposite sides, they are supplementary. Check the point positions rather than guessing from the
angle labels.

C
Figure 4. A, B, C and D are cyclic in that order. A and D lie on the same side of chord BC.
4. Exam-style riders: questions
Rider 1 — cyclic quadrilateral
ABCD is cyclic, with A, B, C, D in order around the circle. ∠ABC = 72°, ∠BAD = 110° and ∠BAC = 48°
Find (a) ∠ADC, (b) ∠BCD and (c) ∠BDC.
Rider 2 — proportionality
In triangle ABC, D lies on AB, E lies on AC and DE ∥ BC. AD:DB = 2:3, AC = 20 cm and BC = 15 cm. Find (a)
AD:AB, (b) AE:AC, (c) AE and (d) DE.
Rider 3 — tangent and chord
A tangent touches a circle at A. Chord AB is drawn, and P is a point in the alternate segment
corresponding to the chosen tangent ray. The angle between this tangent ray and AB is 55°. If ∠ABP =
47°, find (a) ∠APB and (b) ∠PAB.
Rider 4 — diameter
AB is a diameter, C is on the circumference, ∠ABC = 34° and AB = 13 cm. Find (a) ∠ACB, (b) ∠BAC and
(c) AC, rounded to two decimals.
