1. Activity One: Planning a Survey
Organising a pedestrian survey of Baboon Point in Elands Bay requires careful
preparation regarding terrain, safety, equipment, and environmental conditions over a
demanding seven-hour duration. The survey area covers a coastal and near-coastal
landscape characterized by varied topography, including sandy dunes, rocky outcrops,
and coastal slopes depicted in Addendum A. Field personnel must be fully prepared for
physical challenges such as steep slopes, loose sand, uneven terrain, and potential
exposure to coastal winds and intense sun. Crew members must wear sturdy, broken-in
hiking boots or walking shoes to protect against sharp stones and snakes, comfortable
layered clothing suitable for fluctuating coastal temperatures, a wide-brimved hat, and
sunglasses. Essential equipment to bring includes a daypack, ample drinking water to
prevent dehydration over the seven-hour duration, high-SPF sunscreen, a notebook,
pencils, scale arrows, GPS units, and bags for surface finds if permitted by research
protocols. Surveyors should maintain close spacing to ensure systematic coverage,
scanning the ground carefully for archaeological indicators such as shell fragments,
stone tools, and pottery shards as outlined in the study guide. Environmental awareness
is crucial, as teams navigate sensitive dune vegetation and heritage resources,
ensuring all safety precautions and recording standards are strictly maintained
throughout the field session.
